It seems it was only a week ago instead of ten that we were just gearing up for the new school year. Everyone quickly became adjusted and settled into another year of challenging learning. Parents often ask me, “What can I do to help my child be successful this school year?” My answer is always the same. Be an actively involved parent in the learning process. Don’t just ask the same, routine questions. Strive to know more. Review every page with your child of the weekly graded papers. Frequently listen to and read with your child, even if your child is older. Reading together leads to thinking and talking about events and topics that can spin off in all sorts of interesting directions. Have your child tell you about the lessons and activities in each subject area and what is ahead for the week. Keep a discussion about school ongoing in your home.
